Concept Work

Preliminary Work

Here is an example of how I work sometimes, breaking down my illustrations into four categories. Thumbnail, Value Study, and (if there is color) a Color Comp before going into the Finished Piece. I don't always do this, but for complicated pieces it works for me. You can see the finished pieces in my "Portfolio" page. These are all fantasy based and I had full creative freedom.

Concept Art

These would be my actual conceptual pieces where I was given a topic and asked to develop it. Making characters, environments, props, and coming up with a story that made sense.

Little Red Riding Hood meets Steampunk, traditional and digital, 2012
This is a western steampunk (and darker) take on little red. The Wolf is a businessman who has come to try and con Granny out of giving her fortune (You know, when she finally does die) to him instead of Little Red. The Huntsman and Red try their hardest to protect Granny and keep her from signing that deal.

The Wolf                                                                       The (Bodyguard) Huntsman

Little Red Riding Hood (Heir to fortune)                                              (Mob Boss Leader) Granny

The setting mostly takes place in Granny's large Colonial/Victorian style home. (Somewhere between late 1700s and late 1800s...since she's lived for so long and the advancing tehcnology allows her to prolong her life, her wheelchair helps her live and she's got lenses (yea, think camera lenses) that enable her to see 20/20).

Here I was setting up a scene that would be a critical moment in the story. Here enters the big, bad wolf.

And lastly, here is the final product, all painted using Photoshop with no photo collage elements.

Enter: The Big Bad Wolf, digital, 2012

Jekyll and Hyde, digital, 2012
We were told to pick a genre mash up between a list of classic tales and pair it with a setting. I went for Jekyll and Hyde and what made the most sense to me was futuristic. I kind of came up with a Tron: Legacy meets Aeon Flux in the feel of the animation/movie/game. I took a few artistic liberties and want to continue to develop this concept.

These are all preliminary sketches. I made Mr. Utterson into Ms. Utterson.
Hyde being a jerk. Trying to capture his vulgarity.
Hyde's initial character sketches. Trying to finalize his punk feel.

Ms. Utterson. She's fairly quiet and observant...and has a dreadlock mohawk. She's an andriod who had her human memories transferred to her after Dr.Jekyll's successful run.

This is Dr. Jekyll. He's a quiet older man who had his body transferred into an android so he might continue his research in bio technology. When he was downloading his personality, there formed a glitch and thusly we have Mr. Hyde. Jekyll tries to keep him at bay with the use of injections of a potion he created.

I mostly finalized their look except for Hyde. I am working on making him a lot darker (he's the one in red)

Now I'm trying to come up with an effective scene. My thoughts are to have Ms. Utterson walk in on Jekyll while he's about to transform. I haven't decided if she's seen him or not.

Initial rough sketch
First run through. I, and my teacher, felt I had too much going on so it was distracting.

This is the revised version which went well. It's still a work in progress. I have to change a few things but the crit went over well.

Finished piece using an under painting for values and then painting on top for color and accents.
